With reference to your letter of September 22nd.
last enclosing copy of a letter from the Colonial Office
dated the 19th. of the same month in which you informed us
that in view of Mr. A. J. Barry's visit to China on other
business the Secretary of State for the Colonies had
sanctioned an inspection by him, on our behalf, of the above
Railway, we have the honour to inform you that we have now
received his written report. Both before and after the
drafting of his report, a copy of which we herewith enclose,
we had several conferences with Mr. Barry and consequently
the report now submitted may be taken as embodying the views,
not only of that gentleman, but also of ourselves on the
various subjects submitted to us for our consideration and
advice and we therefore need not here refer to them in a
separate communication.
With reward, however, to the Chief Resident Engineer,
Mr. Eves, we regret to state that in spite of his previous
